HOT CHIP (FELIX & AL DJ SET)
Since its official formation in 2000 by old school friends Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard, Hot Chip has constantly pushed the boundaries of what pop music can be. At fifteen or sixteen Alexis and Joe would spend their Friday evenings playing acoustic guitar and hanging out. Joe would play songs on his guitar and Alexis would help him record things on his computer at home. Even at such a young age the duo tried to record things properly. They were both very serious about music and an obsession soon developed. The name Hot Chip was set in stone, even then. At the age of about 16 they played a lo-fi lunchtime gig at their school in Putney where they covered “Range Life,” by Pavement, “ Walking with Jesus,” by Spaceman 3 and performed some of their own songs on organ and electric guitar. They both listened to The Beatles, The Kinks and shared a love for Prince, Stevie Wonder and Tim Buckley too. After school they went to different universities but stayed in touch, getting into new things like Rodney Jerkins’ productions and trying to create things that were inspired by Aphex Twin and Destiny’s Child in their own little way. The eclecticism of their influences was to have a profound and distinguishable effect on the music that Taylor and Goddard would go on to produce with Hot Chip.
In 2003 they signed to Moshi Moshi and 2004 saw the release of their first studio album Coming On Strong, an ambitious record that displayed a distinct aversion to the aggressive nature of processed digital dance music and instead reintroduced listeners to its humanity and original spirit. They were later joined by Felix Marten (programming/synths,) Al Doyle (cello, synths, guitar, horn) and Owen Clarke (guitar, synths & visual artist) who each brought their own unique skills to complete the indefatigable 5 headed pop colossus. At this point the newly formed quintet signed a U.S and U.K record deal with DFA records and EMI. 2006 saw the release of their second album The Warning, which was nominated for both The Mercury Prize and a Grammy award. This album presented Hot Chip’s easy, accessible eclecticism and established a signature pop aesthetic entailing wild electronics, off kilter beats and uniquely intoxicating musical experimentation.
From here, mainstream appeal snowballed. “Over and Over” and “Boy From School,” both reached the top 40. “Over and Over,” which gained acclaim for its music video directed by Nima Nourizadeh was voted as NME’s single of the year. The Warning was followed in 2007 by Made in the Dark, a gold-selling, third studio album that was awash with Hot Chip’s trademark creative bravery. The finished record was an up-front, coherent and melodically bold testament to Hot Chip’s creative talent. “Ready for the Floor,” which was released in January 2008 reached no. 6 in the UK charts. What followed was a big year for the band with guest appearances on The Jonathan Ross Show and Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the UK as well as The Carson Daly show and Jimmy Kimmel in the U.S.
After completing a world tour in 2009 they returned to London to record their fourth album, One Life Stand, which was released in 2010 by Parlophone Records. Warmer, deeper and more stripped back than their previous album, for this record they turned to a proliferation of influences as diverse as the burgeoning UK funky scene to soul music, modern R&B, Northern Soul, Gospel, Golden Age Electronica, Detroit House, Southern soul, the sounds of Arthur Russell, Prince and Theo Parish. True to their signature style, the finished album adeptly presented infectious dance floor fillers alongside songs of intimacy and melancholy. With their first single release; the title track “One Life Stand,” they pulled off the rare trick of executing both at the same time.
Furthermore, for the album they enlisted the considerable talents of two legendary innovators in their fields: Fimber Bravo ( Steel n’ Skin,) on steel pans and Charles Hayward (The Heat) on drums. Hot Chip supported the release of this album by returning to the live arena with a sell out, critically acclaimed UK tour supported by Norwegian electro-troupe CassioKids as well as one man electronic troubadour Rob Smoughton aka Grovesnor. The tour culminated in a special later-nighter in Brixton with special guests Simian Mobile
Disco, Spring Heel Jack and Zongamin.
April of 2009 saw the release of their second single, “I Feel Better,” an epic hit of euphoric hands-in-the- air bliss that was publicly received as towering Euro classic. The track became the most blogged about track from One Life Stand and regularly featured on The Hype Machine as well as Elbows hottest artist charts and went on to garner their first Radio 1 A-List single . Hot Chip also enlisted the talents of the multitalented actor, director and & comedian Peter Serafinowicz to direct the “I Feel Better,” music video. A rich and varied selection of remixers such as Richard X, Den Haan and Ill Blu were also chosen to create storming remixes of the track with added vocals by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (aka Will Oldham) one of the most sought after, brilliant and beguiling musicians of American folk.
Having already stormed Glastonbury as penultimate headliners on The Other Stage, In 2010 the band united with long term friends and pioneering musical comrades LCD Soundsystem to a series of co-headline play shows in U.S and U.K during which they debuted “Ends of the Earth,” from their forthcoming album due for release later this year.
The band is also known for its DJ talent, DJing regularly worldwide and having released several mix CDs and including 2007’s DJ Kicks album, 2009’s Hot Chip A Bugged Out Mix, as well as remixes of tracks by the likes of Gorillaz, Amy Winehouse, Kraftwerk, Queens of the Stoneage and Matthew Dear to name but a few.
